Wick
The wick is what makes your candle burn. You need to choose the right size wick for your candle. A wick that’s too small won’t burn the wax properly, and a wick that’s too big might cause the candle to burn too fast or produce a lot of smoke. You can find pre – waxed wicks at the craft store. They come in different sizes, so make sure to pick the one that suits your candle container.
Fragrance Oils
This is where you get to have some fun. Fragrance oils are what give your candles their amazing scents. You can go for classic scents like lavender for relaxation or vanilla for a warm, comforting smell. Or get a bit more adventurous with scents like tropical fruit or spicy cinnamon. Just make sure to use fragrance oils that are specifically made for candles. Essential oils can be used, but they don’t always hold up as well during the burning process.
Containers
You’ll need a container to hold your melted wax as it cools and hardens. You can use old jars, glass tumblers, or even metal tins. Make sure your container is clean and dry before you start. And if it’s a new container, you might want to wash it with warm, soapy water and dry it thoroughly to get rid of any dust or debris.
Tools
- Double boiler or melting pot: You need a way to melt the wax safely. A double boiler is ideal because it heats the wax gently and evenly. If you don’t have one, you can make a makeshift one by placing a smaller pot inside a larger pot with some water in the bottom.
- Thermometer: To make sure the wax is at the right temperature, you’ll need a thermometer. This is super important because different waxes have different melting and pouring temperatures.
- Stirring utensil: A metal or wooden spoon works great for stirring the melted wax and the fragrance oil together.
- Scissors: You’ll need these to cut the wick to the right length.
Step – by – Step Guide to Making Scented Candles
Step 1: Prepare Your Workspace
Lay down some newspaper or a plastic tablecloth to protect your surface from any wax spills. Make sure you have all your supplies within reach and that your workspace is well – ventilated.
Step 2: Prepare the Wick
Cut the wick to a length that’s about 1 – 2 inches longer than the height of your container. Attach the wick to the bottom of the container using a wick sticker or a small amount of melted wax. You can also use a wick holder to keep the wick centered in the container.
Step 3: Melt the Wax
If you’re using a double boiler, fill the bottom pot with water and bring it to a simmer. Place the wax in the top pot and let it melt slowly. Stir the wax occasionally with your spoon to help it melt evenly. Keep an eye on the thermometer. Different waxes melt at different temperatures:
- Soy wax usually melts at around 120 – 140°F (49 – 60°C).
- Paraffin wax melts at about 130 – 150°F (54 – 66°C).
- Beeswax melts at a higher temperature, around 145 – 165°F (63 – 74°C).
Step 4: Add the Fragrance Oil
Once the wax is completely melted and at the right temperature, it’s time to add the fragrance oil. The amount of fragrance oil you add depends on personal preference, but a general rule of thumb is to add about 1 ounce of fragrance oil for every pound of wax. Stir the wax and fragrance oil together well for about 2 – 3 minutes to make sure the scent is evenly distributed.
Step 5: Pour the Wax
Carefully pour the scented wax into your prepared container. Try to pour it slowly and steadily to avoid creating air bubbles. If you do get some air bubbles, you can use a toothpick to pop them. Leave about 1/4 – 1/2 inch of space at the top of the container.
Step 6: Let the Candle Cool
Let the candle cool completely at room temperature. This can take a few hours, depending on the size of the candle. As the wax cools, it might shrink a bit and form a sinkhole in the center. You can fill this in with some additional melted wax if you want.
Step 7: Trim the Wick
Once the candle is completely cool and hard, trim the wick to about 1/4 inch. This will help the candle burn evenly and prevent it from smoking.
Troubleshooting
- Candle won’t burn evenly: This could be because the wick is too small or not centered. Try trimming the wick a bit shorter or re – centering it if possible.
- Candle has a weak scent: You might not have added enough fragrance oil. Next time, try increasing the amount slightly. Also, make sure the wax is at the right temperature when you add the fragrance oil.
- Candle is smoking: A smoking candle could be due to a wick that’s too long. Trim the wick and try again. It could also be because the wax isn’t burning cleanly, which might mean you need to use a different type of wax or adjust the wick size.
